janet-stirlingHi, I’m Janet. I live in England with my husband in a beautiful village along an estuary in the South West. We have 3 grown sons with 3 gorgeous daughters-in-law and 6 fabulous grandchildren.

Because I lived in the USA until I was 12 then lived in Spain until I was 20 and now live here in England, my recipes will reflect that diversity of culture.

I am sharing my English recipes for my American family and friends who have requested them.  And I’ll share my favourite recipes for when you are looking for inspiration to lift you out of that ditch, at the side of the road, that we all fall in from time to time, where your brain just can’t think of anything different to cook for dinner, and I’m sharing Christian “Recipes for Life” to bless you and feed your spirit.

This is where my title “The Eternal Cook” came from . Over 30 years ago, we were waiting for our house to be built.  There were 5 of us and 2 dogs in a flat made for 2 people. A travelling group of Christians we knew from Denmark were travelling through our area so stopped by to visit us. There were 21 of them. As we got out of bed they got in it and the others slept on the floor. They had been on the road for several days without rest.  I rushed to our local butcher and asked what I could cook for 21 people (plus our family of 5) and he said , “Pork chops” so I bought pork chops for all and served it with mashed potatoes and spring cabbage. I had a small cooker with only 2 hotplates a small grill and small oven. We only had about 5 or 6 plates and the same of cutlery but I started cooking and as one ate they would bring their dish back empty and wash it up for the next one to eat. I continued to cook and serve and they ate and washed dishes until all had been fed. The leader of the group whose name was Johnny, came and thanked me. He put his arm around my shoulders and dubbed me “The Eternal Cook”. When I set up this blog, The Eternal Cook came to mind again after all those years and I knew it was to be the title of my blog.

  1. Awesome Janet what a wonderful idea. I dont cook much but will try tht Paella it sounds and looks delicous, I will return and read the recipes for life….. so coool!!! A question is tht Cottage pie called Sheperd’s pie!

    • Good to hear from you Roseann and glad you like the blog. You won’t be sorry when you make the Paella. Delish! Technically Cottage Pie is made with beef and Shepherd’s pie is made with lamb but I’m sure many get the names mixed up. Doesn’t really matter what you call it, it is good home cooking.

  3. Hi Janet! That’s a great story – I never heard it before. Very inspirational and a great name as well for your blog. Makes me want to cook (heehee). I have a “killer” recipe for brussels sprouts that I’ll send you. I tried it last Christmas and it was a hit, some even had seconds! 🙂 Give me love to all.
